How is Factor V treated?
Treatment is not needed unless a clot is formed. A doctor could prescribe a blood thinning medicine. Treatment could last for three to six months. Longer if their is multiple clots.
How do I know if I have it?
See your doctor. A blood test can test for the Factor V gene, take an x-ray to locate the clot, or detect the clot using a ultrasound examination.
How does it affect pregnancy and how is it treated?
The Factor V mutation can increase the risk of a pregnancy loss or miscarriage. Though most women with Factor V Leiden have normal pregnancies, researchers have suggested that the mutation can lead to high blood pressure, slow fetal growth, and separation of the placenta from the uterine wall.
During pregnancy if a woman carries two genes of Factor V Leiden, she must receive treatment. All women who carry the gene must wear a special kind of stockings during pregnancy.
How can I prevent it?
The way it can be prevented is the same way you prevent any blood clot:
1. Avoid unhealthy foods and smoking
2. Exercise Regularly
3. Avoid standing still or in the same spot for over a long period of time, the blood needs to flow.
